The Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) held its sixth Green Summit at the Lowry on 2 October 2023. So it was another early morning for FFGM members, who were waiting outside to speak to the hundreds of delegates – including politicians, industry representatives and members of environment groups – as they poured into the venue.
While the GMCA was keen to display its green credentials, we were there to remind everyone about the £1.6bn that the ten Greater Manchester councils’ pension fund has invested in fossil fuels.
It was encouraging to discover that many of the delegates were already well aware of the Greater Manchester Pension Fund’s shameful fossil fuel investments and already supported our campaign. Others were shocked to hear about the fund’s refusal to contemplate divesting from fossil fuels and to transfer the investments into the many local projects that were being discussed at the summit.
